 Words from the Pastor

Throughout history followers of Christ have chosen to make sacrifices for the sake of Jesus.  Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24).  The apostle Paul is an example of one who learned this lesson well.  In the epistle to the Philippians chapter three (3), Paul reminds the people that “knowing Jesus Christ my Lord” is the most important accomplishment in life.  Paul had everything going for him:  good family, good education, and great knowledge of his culture.  Furthermore, he observed the cultural rules and laws of Moses.

Recorded in Philippians 3:7-9 Paul shares “that whatever gains he had, these he has come to regard as loss because of Christ.  8More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.  For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith.”

Human achievements, no matter how impressive, cannot earn a person salvation and eternal life with God.  After Paul considered everything he had accomplished in his life, he decided to write it all off as “rubbish” when compared with the greatness of knowing Jesus.  He was willing to give up everything if that is the price of knowing Jesus.

To know Christ should be our ultimate goal.  How do we know Christ?

1.      Study the life of Christ in the Gospels, see how Christ lived and responded to people. (Matthew 11:28-30)

2.      Study all of the New Testament references to Christ. (Colossians 1:15-2:15)

3.      As you worship and pray, let the Holy Spirit remind you of Christ’s words.  (John 14:26).

4.      Take up Christ’s call to share and or preach the gospel and learn from his suffering.  (Matthew 28:19, Philippians 3:10-11).

To do all these things may mean that we must make major changes in our thinking and in our lifestyle.

Are you willing to change your values, your thinking, and your lifestyle in order to know Christ better?

The journey continues…

Reminder.  Worship Committee is meeting this Tuesday, October 10, at 7:30PM in the BKR.

The Fourth Annual International Potluck Dinner sponsored by the Missions Committee was Saturday, September 30 in the gym.  We had a nice turn-out, a good program, good fellowship, and good food.  The country of focus was Haiti.  We took up an offering for the Mountains of Hope for Haiti Mission and collected $900.  All of that money will go to the mission.  Thank you so much to everyone who attended, who brought food to share, who donated to the mission, who contributed decorations, who helped set-up and decorate, who helped clean-up and put away.  We are blessed with a wonderful congregation.

Update on the clean-up buckets for UMCOR for hurricane relief.  We collected over $3300 for the clean-up bucket project.  Thank you!  In addition, Lenore and Michael Kurz asked the Home Depot in Merrick to donate some 5-gallon buckets, and they donated 20 buckets with lids to our project.  The students in Kim Neri's school Berry Hill contributed sponges, scouring pads, scrub brushes, dish-washing gloves, and Handi Wipes.  The money was used to buy the rest of the buckets and supplies.  On Sunday October 1 after the church service we put together 35 buckets and 20 partial buckets (some supplies were delayed). There was a large turn-out of churchgoers of all ages helping put together buckets on Sunday.  Thank you!!!

The Grace United Methodist Women will be hosting a Soup and Sandwich Luncheon on Saturday, November 18, 2017, at 12:00 p.m.  The tickets are $20.00 for an adult and $10.00 for students.  Proceeds will be donated to the Mary Brennan INN in Hempstead.  Friends and family are welcome.  The luncheon will be accompanied by a program, Challenging Cultural Mindsets:  Musical Theatre as an Agent of Change. The presentation by Virginia Hart Pike will highlight moments in musical theatre history that expose blind spots in our cultural conscience, and reveal how those blind spots were prolonged or challenged through certain prominent people or works.  Some of the musicals that will be highlighted are the iconic Showboat, South Pacific, West Side Story, Hair, Golden Boy, Rent, Next to Normal, and Hamilton.

The Grace UMW have pens available for purchase at $2.00 per pen.  The pens have Grace United Methodist Church with address and phone number printed on the side. They are high quality with a rubber stylus top.  Pens will be available for sale after church and during the coffee hour.
