Words from the Pastor

Have Thine Own Way, Lord

~Adelaide A. Pollard

Have thine own way, Lord!  Have thine own way!

Thou art the potter, I am the clay.

Mold me and make me after thy will,

While I am waiting, yielded and still.

Pollard was discouraged because she was unable to raise the funds required to go to Africa as a missionary.  One evening she attended a prayer service and overheard the words of an elderly woman:  “It really doesn’t matter what you do with us, Lord, just have your own way with our lives.”  Pollard inspired by these words contemplated the story of the potter from Jeremiah 18:3.  She returned home that evening and wrote the hymn “Have Thine Own Way, Lord, 382 in our hymnal.

Isaiah 64:8 states “Yet, O Lord you are our Father.  We are the clay, you are the potter, and we are all the work of your hand” (NIV).  The image of a potter working in clay occurs several times in Scripture.  It illustrates that we are as helpless as lumps of clay to make anything valuable of ourselves.  God has the sovereignty to shape us as he sees fit, much as a potter has the power and the right to mold the clay.

Just as a potter turns the wheel and shapes the clay into a useful vessel, so God uses the turning of events to shape his people.  In light of the new covenant God has established with us through Jesus Christ, we can trust the master potter to work out our imperfections and gently mold us into the likeness of His Son.  How pliable and moldable are you?  Will you question God about his motives or will you let God shape you and make you ready for his use?

My prayer for us is that as we journey through this Advent season we might feel in a fresh way the sense of anticipation that captivated God’s people who waited for Christ in the past, and that we might experience in a new way the sheer exhilaration that compels God’s people to worship Christ in the present.  Let our worship during Advent and beyond make us more pliable to be molded and shaped so that God can use us for his glory.
