Words from the Pastor

In the Christian church, Lent is a season of forty days of repentance and fasting to help people prepare for Easter.  Sundays are not counted because they are considered to be “mini-celebrations of the Resurrection.”  The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts through the Saturday before Easter.  On Ash Wednesday, many of us receive ashes on our foreheads.  We remember that we will return to dust, we repent and we offer gratitude that, through Jesus’ resurrection, God offers us life and salvation.  (He Set His Face to Jerusalem, Richard B. Wilke).

In the Bible, the number forty is highly symbolic for prayer, sacrifice, sober thought, and preparation.  In the story of Noah and the Ark, rain fell for forty days, Moses and the people of Israel were forty years in the wilderness, and Jesus began his ministry by going into the wilderness for forty days.  During the season of Lent, we set aside time to read the Scriptures, pray alone and in fellowship, study, and discuss our Lord’s saving ministry.

On Wednesday, February 14 we will observe Ash Wednesday at our 8PM service in the sanctuary.  Holy Communion will be celebrated.  Ash Wednesday is an invitation to look within – to honestly examine our hearts, our relationships with God and with one another.  The Old Testament minor prophet, Joel, beckons us to return to God with urgency.  The psalmist models how to be humble and filled with heartfelt repentance.  Jesus sends us inward, not outward, to pray in our rooms and draw closer to God.  If we heed Ash Wednesday’s invitation to return, repent, and place our trust in God’s grace, we may rise on Easter morning forgiven and reborn.  The Scripture readings for Ash Wednesday are: Joel 2:1-2, 12-17; Psalm 51:1-17; 2Corinthians 5:20b-6:10; Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21.  We will use some of these readings during our service.  (The Abingdon Worship Annual, 2018)

Please plan to participate in the activities that your church has planned for Lent.  You are invited to Lenten services on Wednesday evenings at 8PM in the chapel.  We will have a book study at 7PM-8PM.  The book we will read and study is Holy Habits by Andrew Roberts.  A copy of the book is available at the church.  We pray that these activities will help us to grow in our relationship with God and with others.

DS 365 Challenge.  Our Long Island West District Superintendent Rev. Kim has challenged us to give up our coffee or snack 1 day of the 365 each year and to give that money we would have spent to the mission he designates for that year.  This year Rev. Kim has designated the Brooklyn United Methodist Church Home (BUMCH).  On Sunday, February 18 the Missions Committee will collect (at the back door after church and at coffee hour) for the DS 365 Challenge. Please bring the money you would have spent on a coffee or a snack to church that day to donate to BUMCH. BUMCH has both a 120-bed nursing facility and a daycare facility for community residents.  They offer medical and nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, spiritual services, meals, and social services to seniors and disabled adults.  Katherine Perkins
