Words from the Pastor

"Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)" is a song by British singer Phil Collins recorded for soundtrack to the 1984 film of the same name.  It is a power ballad in which its protagonist implores an ex-lover to "take a look at me now", knowing that reconciliation is "against all odds" while considering it’s worth trying.  The single, while it reached number two in the United Kingdom, peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, the first for Collins.  It also won the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1985, and it was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Reconciliation is the process by which God and people are brought together again.  The Bible teaches that they are alienated from one another because of God’s holiness and human sinfulness.  It is because of God’s love for us that He takes the initiative in reconciliation while we are still sinners.  Reconciliation is thus God’s own complete act, something that takes place before human actions such as confession, repentance, and restitution.  That is good news for us to know that God has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ(Nelson’s New Illustrated Bible Dictionary).

Since God is in the business of reconciliation, we too should be in this business.  Reconciliation has the power to make us think more clearly, love more dearly, speak more truthfully, and act more genuinely.  Reconciliation activates the process of transformation so that we become more like Jesus.  We become disciples who find it easier to make disciples for the transformation of the world.

Can you imagine the transformation in our lives; if we acknowledge more God’s love for us, and follow more closely his command to love God and one another?  Can you imagine the impact this would have in our church?  If we can imagine it, then we can do it.  Let us use these summer months to reflect on how we can engage in spiritual renewal.  Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds (Hebrews 10:24).  I can imagine us provoking one another to love and good deeds to make our church even more vital.  Can you imagine it?  Let’s do it!

Have a safe and enjoyable the summer,

Pastor Nation
